The transcript from the podcast is below. Any grammatical, punctuation or non-sense errors are totally Google Transcriptions fault. Any brilliance is by the grace of God. 😉

My therapy business has been providing therapy for children in daycare's since 2006. When I first graduated OT school, I took a job with a developmental daycare that was in 1997. So for over 20 years, I've had something to do with therapy in a preschool, and I've learned a ton.

I created a course on how to get more daycare clients. Now, what's interesting here is when a therapist figures out my system of how to get more daycare clients they want to go Hung-Ho, all in to get as many daycare's on board with their private practice at the same time, but this is a mistake.

What I recommend in my course is that certainly you can approach multiple daycares at the same time to see if they're willing to work with you but once one of those daycares agrees to work with you, go with just that one. Focus on that one day care and if anybody else comes online interested in working with you ask them to wait just a little bit because you're busy. You've got another day care that you're trying to provide this service for.

Now that seems a little bit counter intuitive.  Why don't I get as many kids as many daycares as many preschools online at the same time? Here's the reason. You're going to overextend yourself and you're going to get too busy. You're going to stretch yourself too thin when you're trying to do all this good stuff for multiple locations. You're going to fail, you're going to slip and those daycares are going to notice.  Once they notice they're going to think, "well, this therapist is really slacking" and they're not going to invite you back. You don't want to burn that bridge. That's why you want to do one at a time. Do a good job at that one place all the way through before you go to the next day care.

So my advice to you is to not stretch yourself too thin. Don't promise the world to these different daycares that you can make this happen for their daycare because if you don't have the time to allocate to all these different facilities the daycare is not going to invite you back and that's going to ruin your reputation in your area. And guess what?  You live and die by your reputation in the world of business. Focus on one daycare. Do it really well from start to end.

I have a course on how to get more daycare clients. I show you exactly how to do this. I give you all the tools that I use  and walk you through and help you follow through with it.

Go over to StartaTherapyPractice.com/daycare. You can sign up for this course. It's a live course. It's a multi lesson course. I have to limit enrollment because it's live and I want to make sure that I give good attention to each of the therapist who attend Go to StartaTherapyPractice.com/daycare

If you have any questions, let me know. Alright until next time Godspeed to you and your practice.

How can we Market ourselves to this potential Market? I think First we have to point out the difficulties that this new technology will bring. We can start creating innovation of how to merge the technology with a real physical activity.  I think that that's a perfect place for a therapist to be. It's the internet of things. IOT

Can we capitalize on how the overwhelming lure of technology is going to cause real health and mental problems? Maybe real life activities like planting a garden that's a real activity that therapist can engage in with their clients with their potential clients. That's where I'm challenging you as therapists to engage our future therapy.

Therapists must point out the pitfalls with the technology and merge the technology with real-world activities. A lot of this is about accountability. Can we help our clients be accountable to what we're assigning them with their goals to break away from the technology?

Can we help our patients have a healthy interface with the technology? How are we going to help them be accountable with that? That's a therapist role. That's a niche for you as a therapist in private practice.

Paul Potter has been a personal friend of mine for some time now. Recently he and I hung out at the WebPT Ascend conference in Ft. Worth, Texas.

He tried to get me to sit on one of the live bulls in front of the Stock Yard rodeo arena. I’m from Arkansas. I let him know this wasn’t my first rodeo.

Paul knows what it’s like to begin a start-up for less than $100 when he lacked the necessary finances and self-confidence.

He experienced what it’s like to start all over when devastated by a life-threatening diagnosis.

After managing his own private practice for over 35 years Paul knows how valuable it is to have the support and guidance from family, friends and experienced mentors.

Now he has created a course to help therapists start a cash practice. Click to check out Paul’s Cash Practice From Scratch Course.

Paul is a Physical Therapist who lives in Nebraska with his wife, who is also a PT. They have four daughters. For more than 35 years he successfully managed his own private practice. He now guides therapists on how to start up their own practice at his website PaulPotterpt.com and podcast.

Paul created the Cash Therapy Success Academy because he believes in the power and impact of therapy entrepreneurs creating small business. Therapy provided in large organizations is essential and make no mistake we need it. But the real magic begins with entrepreneurs – born with the unique gift to build successful businesses.

The Cash Therapy Success Academy exists to help entrepreneurs like you create a fulfilling and profitable practice for yourself and those you care about. We provide quality resources and training through courses, books, and coaching found on the PaulPotterPT.com blog and Cash Therapy Success Academy.

Question from a practice owner: “What is the best way to approach a doctor to ask them to send me referrals?”

This is not the first time I have seen this question. First, I want to point out that the question is flawed. My answers, which I give in this podcast, are like President John F. Kennedy’s quote:  “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Just insert “potential referral source” for the word “country.”

While this episode is geared toward the therapist who is considering opening a private practice, I know that therapists who already have a private practice will come away with many future action items for their utility belt too.  So listen in one and all.

What if you knew what to do before you started your private practice to ensure the success of that practice? What if you had super heroes waiting to help you out along the way?

Many therapists sort of wing it from the time they conceive of starting a private practice. Sure they may get the obvious tasks done like creating a Facebook page, visiting the doctors, taking out a loan, and renting a large space, but they may not get to some very important tasks which actually work to ensure the practice is going to be around for more than a year.

By the way, the obvious tasks I mentioned above often don't make a dimes worth of difference or in the case of taking out a loan and renting a large space may actually bankrupt you.

What if you knew what worked? Would you be compelled to do it? Before you answer yes you might want to listen to what I have to say. Don't blow off these suggestions or pick and choose which ones you want to follow. I am giving you a recipe for success. Change the ingredients and your success pie might come out looking like a pile of goo.

Don't forget to download the FREE Action Item Checklist to put on your fridge as a reminder of how to be successful.

The Dudes Abide

So who are the Dudes?

Russell Cross is a speech therapist from the UK and works with the Prentke Romich Company whom he has been with since 1995. He is the owner of a number of US patents and his research interests are in corpus linguistics, machine syntax and assistive technology.

Chip Clarke is a speech therapist who has been in the assistive technology arena since 1989. Chip started a private practice called Asistive Technology Works, Inc which has now evolved into an AAC equipment distributor. Chip also consults with Prentke Romich.

The Speech Dudes website introduces them as Dude 1 and Dude 2 with a tag line that reads "The Edgy Side of Speech Pathology; sharp, profane, but never dull."

Reminiscent of Thing 1 and Thing 2 from Dr. Seuss, these two guys like to have fun.  I had a great time talking to them.

Their blog, Speechdudes.wordspress.com, has been featured in the ASHA Leader magazine. The dudes describe the blog as a stream of consciousness.

Here is some of what we cover:

  • How to fund AAC devices

  • Who needs to be in on an AAC eval? OT and Speech, Speech only?

  • Are the report requirements different for private practices versus a hospital or other facility

  • Eye gaze technology and AAC communication - What's coming

Julie Entwistle is an Occupational Therapist who is a partner at EntwistlePower Occupational Therapy. She has grown her practice rather organically which has made it strong and successful. Julie's practice sees somewhere around 500 clients currently.

Julie, like most private practice owners, felt a disconnect when she was "working for the man" in big industry therapy. She says the company she as working for seemed to be working for the insurance companies and not those clients they were treating.

After maternity leave (Julie has 4 children) friends began to ask her when she was going to go into business for herself. They told her "What do you have to lose." It was a question she took seriously.

Julie realized she had nothing to lose and much to gain by going into private practice. She didn't even have to let some of her referral sources know about her thoughts, they asked her when they could refer clients.

Her solid reputation and hard "get it done" work ethic preceded her to the point that referral sources sought her out to treat their clients.

Here is what we cover:

  • How she manages her practice

  • Why it is important to pay attention to government legislation

  • Why it pays to be ethical and responsible

  • Why she is trying to diversify her practice

  • Where she treats clients

  • Who her referral sources are

  • How she markets her practice

  • How she uses her website to generate referrals

  • How she uses videos that she creates to market her practice

  • What types of equipment she uses

  • What software she uses for paperwork

  • What she uses to invoice her clients

In this podcast I give 5 actionable tips that you can implement right now to help your private practice.

I have taken a short break from producing a podcast due to a new addition to my family. My wife and I had a baby a couple of weeks ago and the little bundle of joy has taken all of my extra time, but that is ok. I enjoy each of my children and they are a great motivation for me as an entrepreneur and to help other entrepreneurs. My actions in this realm do not go unnoticed by my children and my efforts are a great lesson for them. So, with that said, I appreciate your patience with my hiatus but let's get back to the task at hand.

Any time I put out information about marketing a private practice it gets a lot of attention. I am not deluded to think that you and everyone else is waiting with baited breath for my marketing tips. I think small business owners will read and should read all they can on marketing. I know I do.

Here are the 5 marketing tips

  • Website - Yes more website tips because your website is important

  • Video - Simple how to tips on creating a marketing video for your practiceGood Postcard

  • Facebook - How to be helpful and market your practice at the same time

  • Google Adwords - How I use my Google marketing dollar

  • Postcards - Sometimes old school is the best school. I tell you how to use a postcard for marketing

There are a couple of themes within these tips and with all marketing for that matter.

  1. What are your competitors or other similar businesses doing?

  2. Are you capturing your great ideas?

I continue to develop my attention to detail when it comes to how my competition or similar businesses market themselves. I try and notice this in my geographical surroundings and in the on line world. In this podcast I dive a little deeper into how I do that.

Once you start noticing these marketing details you must be capturing them in order to re-visit them for future use. I have mentioned that I use Evernote to do this and I cannot suggest enough that you do the same.

I would love to know your thoughts about how to market a private practice. What is working for you? Have you tried any of the suggestions I give in this podcast?

Overheard conversation:

Theraprenuer Wannabe:  "I really am burned out and fed up with working for the man. If I had more business skills and knowledge, I would start my own therapy practice. God just didn't bless me with a business mind. I mean, I can't even do long division. It's hopeless, so I guess I will just stay where I am."

Actual Theraprenuer:  "Have you thought about reading a few good books? I can recommend some that will get you started. I hear Scott Harmon has a good podcast and website that you can check out. I remember when I first started out. I didn't know much, but I have learned a ton about business since I started my clinic."

Theraprenuer Wannabe:  "Yeah, but that's you. You have a knack for that stuff. Not me. I'm hopeless. I can't go back to school to get a business degree."

Actual Therapreneur:  "You don't have to get a business degree. That would actually be a stupid thing to do. There is so much good information on the internet.  Plus, by reading a few really good books about business you could give it a go and get out of the rut you are in. You know, a lot of these big time business people never went to business school."

Therapreneur Wanabe:  "You really think I could give it a go? Yeah, maybe so. Imagine me...therapy practice owner. How cool would that be? No more working for the man. What did you say the name of that podcast was?"

OK, this was a fabricated conversation, but I am sure it has happened. Therapists who are riding the fence about starting a private practice are simply struggling with initiative. This is why I created this episode.

After I read a few articles about specific traits and characteristics that entrepreneurs tend to have, I wanted to expand on them and filter them through the lens of a therapy business owner. I also give a few book recommendations and a music review of therapy songs I recently came across on Youtube.

Here is some of what I cover in this episode:

  • 3 Must Read Books
  • The "One Thing" that should motivate you
  • What type of Mindset should a Therapreneur have?
  • Specific Traits of a Therapreneur
  • OT and PT Songs - Hey, what about Speech songs?
  • The Enneagram Personality Test - How do Therapreneurs score on it?
